Sylvester Medal

Royal Society of London

A bronze medal is awarded triennially for the encouragement of mathematical research. The medal is named after James Joseph Sylvester (1814 - 1897) who was Savilian Professor of Geometry, Oxford, in the 1880s.

The Sylvester medal was awarded in 2003, to Professor Lennart Carleson ForMemRS, for his deep and fundamental contributions to mathematics in the field of analysis and complex dynamics. His most spectacular achievement was the proof of the convergence almost everywhere of the Fourier Series of square integrable and continuous functions.
