Director of the Department Membranbiophysik at the Max-Planck- Institut für biophysikalische Chemie, Göttingen, Germany.

Research interests

Present research interests include molecular and cellular mechanisms of Ca++ signalling, neurotransmitter release and synaptic plasticity. Received the Nobel Prize in 1991 in Physiology or Medicine (together with Bert Sakmann) for his development of the tight-seal technique for recording ion channel activity.
